Ethnographic Art

Our collection of ethnographic art consists of masks and statuary from around the world. Some are made of metal, bone or wood. Some are older, some are newer. Each piece is unique. Ethnographic art is such a wonderful way to learn about a different culture. Each artist has succeeded in creating a unique piece of art that conveys emotion, or an idea. Like the masks that many would consider to be scary were really designed to be a protective force. Others have been made out of bone, not just because that was what was available, but also to bring the energy of that kind of animal into the piece.

All of our ethnographic art pieces were collected ethically. And many are from old collections. We hope you enjoy our collection.

Wooden Happy Mask

 This is a unique looking mask from India. It is made from wood which has been painted in some areas and covered in shellac. It has a happy appearance. It's age is unknown. #EA-1

Large Mask

This is a large wooden mask from India. It has been painted with a brown face with black hair and mustache. It's large size makes it a very visible piece of ethnographic art. Age unknown. #EA-2

African Statue

This statue is made of wood. It is a male figure, who is seated with his hands on his knees. Unfortunately, he is missing his penis. Other than that, he is in very good shape. I wish we knew more about him, but he came in a large collection. Age unknown. #EA-3

Wooden Mask

This mask has been carved out of wood. It has no paint or shellac on it. It is a simple yet lovely mask (or wall hanging). I don't know where it came from or how old it is. There is an old looking label on the back but it is in a foreign language. #EA-5

Papua New Guinea Carving

This is a tall wooden carving from Papua New Guinea. It has been carved from a light colored wood and painted along some of the carved design. It has shells for eyes. There is a hole drilled in the top for easy hanging. Age unknown. #EA-6

                       Papua New Guinea Carving

This is a tall wooden carving from Papua New Guinea. It has been carved from a light colored wood then stained a light black. The inside of the carved design was painted with natural pigments. It has shells for eyes. There is a small crack in the wood at the top that is barely visible from the front. There is a hole drilled in the top for easy hanging. Age unknown. #EA-7

 Fertility Wooden Statues

These are three wooden statues from Africa. We received them from an old collection of ethnographic art. We were told they were from Ghana. Their age is unknown but they were brought to the USA before 1970. Sesse wood with black and white pigmentation. There are areas where the paint has worn off. #EA-8
