When you work with stones in crystal healing, meditation or even just having them in your space, they can take on energy. This includes positive as well as negative energies. It’s important to clear them of the negative energies on a regular basis so they can continue to do their work effectively.
What is the right way to cleanse your stones? I personally like a salt water soak overnight. Use good water and sea salt. Just use your intuition as to how much salt to put in. After each healing session I soak the stones in clean salt water and the next day the water is a murky brown. Ech! It works! You just have to be careful about not putting soft stones, like some selenites, calcites or halite in the water. Some will disintegrate. Varieties of quartz like rose quartz, amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz are all safe to use in the water. Agates (blue lace agate, carnelian, chalcedony) and jaspers (ocean jasper, bloodstone, picture , red or yellow jasper) are all fine as well. If you can scratch it with your fingernail, don’t put it in water.
When salt water cleansing isn’t an option smudging with sage works well too. This is handy if you have a soft or large stone or a large collection. Have the smoke of the sage go all around the stones, using your intention that the stones are clearing of any unwanted energies.
Some folks like freezing the stones. Be careful of this, your stones may crack. It isn’t my favorite option. Others like using rice or plain salt. With this method you simply fill a container with rice or salt and bury the stones in them, at least overnight or longer. Then give them a nice rinse.
Whatever your method, be diligent about keeping the stones clean. An energetically dirty stone can’t help you. Happy cleansing!
